Aaron Maté reports on his week in the Occupied Territories.
CKUT Radio spoke with Aron after the evening’s military operation on Arafat’s compound in Ramallah. Daniel, who has been participating in weekly vigils outside of the Israeli Consulate in Montreal on Friday’s at noon with Palestinian and Jewish Unity (PAJU), also asked questions. NOTE: Aaron cell cuts out at 17:20 when answering what action should Canadians take, but Daniel summarizes the interview nicely. In addition to describing his week, Aaron described the scene of Arafat’s compound, the media’s coverage of violence in the Occupied Territories, and the depression that Palestinian’s experience while maintaining their humanity.

Interview with Adam Shapiro and IMC-Palestine. CKUT Radio spoke with Adam after he successfully negotiated an ambulance into President Arafat’s compound. He was the only international non-Palestinian in the compound. A US citizen with the International Solidarity Movement, which brings together Palestinians & Internationals, Adam spent Friday being a “human shield” for ambulances attempting to get past Israeli soldiers.

In Gaza renewed internal clashes killed one Palestinian man. Local residents fear that increased tension between Hamas and Fateh members in Beit Lahia threaten wider spread violence. In the West Bank one Palestinian teenager was killed and another person injured in the village of Aboud when Israeli forces opened fire on them. Abductions occurred across the West Bank. A Palestinian man was detained at a checkpoint in Hebron and beaten by Israeli soldiers before being released.

In the Gaza Strip one man was killed and two others injured when an underground tunnel near the Rafah-Egypt border collapsed on them. A Fateh activist, wounded earlier this week in clashes with Hamas loyalists, died of his injuries. Meanwhile, in the West Bank, 17 Palestinians were abducted by the Israeli military. In Jenin, two Palestinians were taken by the Israeli military during searches in which live ammunition was fired into residents homes.

This Friday marks the four year anniversary of the death of American activist and International Solidarity Movement member Rachel Corrie. Rachel was killed in Gaza, Palestine while defending a Palestinian home against illegal demolition by Israeli bulldozers.

The Israeli “Hot Winter” offensive continued in Nablus. The military surrounded, entered and ransacked homes throughout Nablus. At least 4 Palestinians were abducted. In the Al Far’a refugee camp south of Tubas, Israeli military units entered, fired tear gas into residents homes, and abducted several people. In Jenin, undercover Israeli troops attempted to abduct a leader of the Al-Quds Brigades. He and two other Palestinians were killed in clashes there. In Gaza, Palestinian resistance groups launched rocket attacks on Israeli military installations in Ashkilon and the nearby settlement of Birri, located in the Negev desert.

Israel pulled out of Gaza more than a year ago, but residents there say they are anything but free. Israel retains a tight rein on the border. Palestinian militants continue to direct attacks outward towards Israel, but fighting has also turned inward, as Fatah and Hamas struggle for power.
Laila El-Haddad is a Palestinian journalist who divides her time between Gaza and Durham, N.C. She was in Gaza City this December when violence broke out between the two factions. Dick Gordon talks with Laila about the prospect of civil war in Gaza on The Story. He also hears what it’s like to raise a child under occupation. Laila has a son, 2 ½ year old Yousuf, who is just now beginning to question what the fighting is all about.
