  • Real News: Israel may reoccupy Gaza

    March 16th, 2008 | PalCast Video | | Comments »

    Following a dramatic escalation of violence in Gaza, in which reportedly over 120 Palestinians were killed, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice visited the region in what observers call an attempt to salvage Mideast peace talks. Mideast observers noted Rice’s refusal to use the word “ceasefire” in the ongoing crisis between Israel and Hamas, calling into question whether the deadlock would be solved by a negotiated ceasefire or by other means. The Real News spoke to Osamah Khalil in Cairo.

    Radio Intifada: The Future of Palestine - A Different View

    August 20th, 2007 | Politics | | Comments »

    Because of the ongoing brutal Israel occupation and the discourse controlled by Israel, the US and the EU, the question of the future of Palestine has focused almost exclusively on the idea of a two-state solution. But the future of Palestine must deal with the larger issue of the refugees, Palestinians in the diaspora, and the Palestinians who are citizens of Israel.

    This week’s Radio Intifada explores the current situation on the ground and the recent Fatah coup, the death of the two-state solution, and the role of the PLO and PNC (Palestinian National Congress) in (re)building Palestinian institutions and charting a viable future for Palestinians.

    Special guests:
    Naseer Aruri, Chancellor Professor (Emeritus) of Political Science, U Mass, Dartmouth, his most recent publication is the new edition of Palestine and the Palestinians;

    Virginia Tilley, Chief Research Specialist in Democracy and Governance, Human Sciences Research Council, Pretoria, South Africa, author of The One State Solution: A Breakthrough for Peace in the Israeli-Palestinian Deadlock;

    Osamah Khalil, Palestinian-American doctoral candidate in US and Middle East History, UC Berkeley and frequent contributor to Electronic Intifada;

    and featuring the music of Reem Kalani.

    This show is hosted and produced by Sherna Gluck and Michael Shahin, SWANA (South and West Asia and North Africa) Collective of KPFK for July 19, 2007.

    Crossing the Line interviews Osamah Khalil

    July 29th, 2007 | Politics | | Comments »

    No time in the recent history of the Palestinian people has been so devoid of hope. As in the case of the dark days of the South African apartheid regime, Palestinians are faced with the decision to continue along factional lines or begin to form an umbrella body that has legitimacy both with the country and the international community. Host Chris Brown talks with Osamah Khalil, a doctoral candidate in US and Middle Eastern History at the University of California Berkeley about the need to rebuild the PLO and to rid the country of despotic leaders.

    Later in the show, Brown speaks with Gaza resident and businessman Sam Abdelshafi about life after the Hamas takeover several weeks ago and what ordinary Gazans are saying about the need for fundamental change, as well as the dire economic conditions that nearly 1.5 million Gazans face.

    Then in the final segment, Rania Masri, assistant Professor of Environmental Science at the University of Balamand, updates us about the renewed shelling of the Palestinian camp of Nahr al-Bared and the ongoing humanitarian crisis for its displaced residents.
