Many Palestinians and solidarity activists advocate for the one-state solution as the best for both Israelis and Palestinians. Host Naji Ali talks with author and professor Michael Neumann who argues that the one-state solution is an illusion rather than a practical and possible solution to the conflict.
Next, Israeli Occupation Forces have been given new orders that allow troops to use live rounds against Palestinians demonstrating against the apartheid wall in Jerusalem. Author and activist Anna Baltzer joins Ali to discuss these latest tactics and the broader implications they have on resistance to the occupation.
And as always, Crossing the Line begins with “This Week in Palestine,” a service provided by The International Middle East Media Center.

Because of the ongoing brutal Israel occupation and the discourse controlled by Israel, the US and the EU, the question of the future of Palestine has focused almost exclusively on the idea of a two-state solution. But the future of Palestine must deal with the larger issue of the refugees, Palestinians in the diaspora, and the Palestinians who are citizens of Israel.
This week’s Radio Intifada explores the current situation on the ground and the recent Fatah coup, the death of the two-state solution, and the role of the PLO and PNC (Palestinian National Congress) in (re)building Palestinian institutions and charting a viable future for Palestinians.
Special guests:
Naseer Aruri, Chancellor Professor (Emeritus) of Political Science, U Mass, Dartmouth, his most recent publication is the new edition of Palestine and the Palestinians;
Virginia Tilley, Chief Research Specialist in Democracy and Governance, Human Sciences Research Council, Pretoria, South Africa, author of The One State Solution: A Breakthrough for Peace in the Israeli-Palestinian Deadlock;
Osamah Khalil, Palestinian-American doctoral candidate in US and Middle East History, UC Berkeley and frequent contributor to Electronic Intifada;
and featuring the music of Reem Kalani.
This show is hosted and produced by Sherna Gluck and Michael Shahin, SWANA (South and West Asia and North Africa) Collective of KPFK for July 19, 2007.

This week on Crossing The Line, the ongoing debate of two states vs. one state in Israel/Palestine is nothing new. However, the debate looms larger when we talk about the issue solely in the peace movement. CTL presents part one of a two-part conversation with noted Israeli historian Ilan Pappe.
Also this week, as Israeli incursions onto occupied lands begin to increase, we’ll find out what the true facts are on the ground from our good friend and colleague Sam Bahour in el-Bireh.
Then later in the podcast our weekly commentary by Mumia abu-Jamal and The War’s Toll compiled and read by Scott Burgwin of the Stand Independent News Service.

Debates about possible solutions to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict revolve around two proposals: the “two-state solution” and the “one-state solution,” both of which, we keep being told by wise pundits, are “impossible.” The “Two-State Solution” we are told is impossible because of the “facts on the ground,” namely the large number of Israeli settlements; the networks of Jewish-only roads which connect them; and the wall Israel is continuing to build illegally, all of which have carved the West Bank and East Jerusalem into numerous small enclaves, or “Bantustans,” which can not possibly be woven together to form a viable Palestinian state. The “One-State Solution” we are told is “impossible” because Israel would lose its character as a “Jewish State,” and anyone who dabbles with that idea is considered at best a “security risk” or at worst “an enemy” of the state of Israel and treated as such.
