  • Dr. Norman Finklestein speaks out on the denial of his tenure by DePaul University

    June 12th, 2007 | Politics |

DePaul University recently announced that political science professor Norman Finkelstein would not be getting tenure. That means the school rejected his bid for a permanent job.

Finkelstein’s work is controversial - he accuses some Jews of creating and profiting from what he calls the “Holocaust industry”. He also condemns Israel’s treatment of Palestinians. He also happens to be the son of Holocaust survivors.

But some people in academia say there was too much outside interference and personal politics driving DePaul’s decision not to keep him.

    1. Decentering Damascus: DePaul University: Norman Finkelstein would not be getting tenure Says:

[...] Finkelstein, son of holocaust survivors and outspoken critic of oppressive Israeli policy in Palestine, has come under attack from detractors like Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz, who seeks to silence critics of Israel and has successfully interfered in internal DePaul tenure processes. Despite being in the midst of their hectic finals-week and upcoming graduation, student leaders are currently sacrificing their time by occupying the Executive Offices of DePaul University indefinitely until their demands for the tenure of Professors Finkelstein and Larudee are met.Listen to Dr. Norman Finklestin on his case here. Norman Finkelstein should be given the Congressional Medal of Honor for his valor and courage. The President of DePaul and the minority who voted against Mr.Finkelstein’s tenure should find it hard to face themselves in the mirror every morning and Harvard should sack Alan Dershowitz. Did he take a sabbatical to carry out his crusade against Mr.Finkelstein? Does he ever really teach? Would his students camp out in the executive halls of Harvard to show their support for him? I seriously doubt it. Shame on DePaul and Dershowitz and Bravo! for Norman Finkelstein. It’s refreshing and encouraging to know that he has the support and esteem of a wide majority of his peers, the devotion and admiration of his students and I’m sure many others like myself who admire him for his scholarship, integrity and strength of character. I wish him all the best.
